GE FREE NZ Call to Action:

Proposed National Environmental Standard (NES) for Plantation Forestry

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) are calling for submissions.  There are grave concerns that the MPI proposed new National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry would remove the ability of Councils to place any precautionary or prohibitive GE policies in local plans.

For more information see below :)

Submissions must be received by MPI before 5 pm, Tuesday 11 August 2015

(it's easy! with the GE FREE NZ or Green Party submission guide below at ***)

Tuesday 11th August – ‘Have your say’ MPI’s submissions close

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking your views on the proposed subject matter of a National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry (NES-PF). This is a proposal to change how plantation forestry activities are managed under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). If implemented, an NES-PF would replace councils’ existing district and regional plan rules for managing plantation forestry and allow GE trees in NZ

Take Action:

Protect and strengthen our forestry industry, and protect NZ councils excellent and much needed precautionary & prohibitive GE policies...make a submission to the Ministry for Primary Industries in response to the MPI proposed new National Environmental Standard (NES) for Plantation Forestry in NZ...

Deadline for submissions: 5pm, Tuesday 11 August .

It's easy! Have your Say!

Please oppose MPI's specific (outrageous) proposal to allow GE trees and override NZ councils (excellent, much needed) precautionary and prohibitive GE/GMO policies in local plans.

We need your help to make our forest industry smart and sustainable, and protect our existing valuable GE free status and "100% Pure NZ" brand.

The National Party is proposing to take away the rights local communities and their councils have to protect their environment from destructive forestry practices that degrade indigenous habitats, pollute our rivers, and hurt our fisheries.

National is attempting (through a change in regulation) to allow risky outdoor GE tree experiments and the release of GE trees in NZ.

National want to override the good work done by local councils ( who have done robust analysis and undertaken robust and transparent consultation with their communities) over the last l5 years to create a much needed additional tier of local protection against the risks of outdoor use of GMOs.

National’s proposed new standards for plantation forestry will help big, foreign-owned forestry companies make a quick buck at the expense of our environment and the local communities they work in.

GE trees are prohibited by both international certification bodies (Forest Stewardship Council- FSC- and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification- PEFC) who certify genuinely sustainable forests.

Tell MPI and the Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy to strengthen bottom lines for the New Zealand forestry industry to help secure the long-term sustainability of the sector and protect our access to key markets and premiums (for certified forests under PEFC or FSC), our waterways, soils and wider environment.
