MORE THAN 16,000 NEW ZEALANDERS SAY 'NO' TO GE TREES

Pressure on the Ministry for Primary Industries over the last two years has resulted in MPI removing controversial clause 6.4 (GE trees) from the new National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry.

The new NES-PF (1) gives foresters, councils, and communities clear guidelines on how to protect the environment while achieving a sustainable forestry industry.

GE Free Northland welcomes the removal of the clause that would have permitted the planting of GE trees anywhere in NZ and specifically overriden any precautionary or prohibitive GE policies and rules of local councils (including those       of Northland and Auckland).

“We are pleased MPI has listened to the many thousands of submitters who have called for the removal of the controversial clause,” said Martin Robinson, spokesperson for GE Free Northland.

NATIONAL PARTY POWER GRAB STRIKES A ROCK- PRAISE FOR MAORI PARTY
GE Free Northland congratulates the Maori Party for resisting the National Party's attempt to strip councils of their ability to create enforceable GE Free Zones.
The Environment Minister wants new powers under the Resource Management Act (RMA) that he could use to extinguish Whangarei, Far North, and Auckland's official GE Free status.
Last week, the two Maori Party MP's informed the Minister Nick Smith they did not support those powers if they could be used to do away with GE Free Zones.
"We are grateful to the Maori Party for stating their support for GE Free Zones and our food sovereignty," said Martin Robinson, GE Free Northland spokesperson.

First Stake in the Ground to Keep Hastings GM Free

From: http://purehawkesbay.org/first-stake-in-the-ground-to-keep-hastings-gm-free/

A group of Hawke’s Bay food producers have launched a campaign to keep Hastings GMO Free as the Hastings Council prepares to go head to head with Federated Farmers and the Government.

Pure Hawke’s Bay today put its first stake in the ground, putting up billboards around the region to raise awareness and gain support in the fight to keep Hastings GMO Free.

Pure Hawke’s Bay President, and sheep and beef farmer Bruno Chambers says having a GMO Free region creates more economic and marketing opportunities.

“It means as Hastings producers we can tell buyers and customers that produce grown in our fields is officially GMO Free. If we can’t claim this, we loose our competitive global advantage. We need to tell the GM Free story and officially show the world that we grow produce naturally.

“It adds more value to our exports and creates significant economic benefits for Hawke’s Bay.”

Last year, backed by leading Hawke’s Bay food producers, Hastings District Council became the first in New Zealand to secure the territory’s GM Free food producer status under the local plan.

While this initiative enjoys overall support from producers and the wider community, Federated Farmers is challenging the Hastings decision in the Environment Court.

As well as this, the councils move is also threatened by proposed changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA), which would see the government take away councils powers to establish GM Free Zones.
