Consensus among leading experts - genes are not carriers of isolated traits

Gene technology is based on the belief that genes are carriers of single traits. So it was believed that you can transfer traits by transferring single genes. Now it has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt that this is wrong through research organized by the United States National Human Genome Research Institute.
Genes are not carriers of single traits
An exhaustive four-year effort by 35 groups of scientists from all over the world has resulted in the conclusion that it is proven beyond any doubt that genes work in a different way than believed when gene technology was conceived in 1973. The genes work in networks where the effect of every gene is decided by the interaction with many other genes as well with its environment.
So the one-gene-one-trait concept, the very basis of gene technology, is fundamentally wrong.
Gene technology is inherently unpredictable and therefore unsafe
The conclusion that genes work in networks that decide the behaviour of genes shatters the very basis of every risk assessment of all kinds of commercial biotechnology products including genetically engineered foods. The risk assessment policies have been based on the assumption that insertion of gene means just an addition of a specific trait and nothing else.
But the new understanding means that completely unpredictable effects can result from the insertion of a gene. This possibility has not been considered in present risk assessments. See our article "Inadequate safety assessment of GE foods"
We have pointed out that gene tech cannot work safely since long and are happy to find that ultimately an authoritative body of leading scientists agrees about the complex network nature of gene behavior that makes genetic engineering unpredictable.
Conclusion
This definitely confirms our long held position genetically engineered foods and other biotech products may contain unpredictable hazardous substances. As the safety testing has not taken this into account, foods and other biotech products may contain dangerous substances.
Therefore it is only a matter of time before a catastrophe occurs due to the absence of rigorous safety testing. Already one serious catastrophe has occured which most probably was caused by GE causing the unexpected appearance of a very poisonous substance in a food supplement, which killed 37 and permanently disabled 1500 people, see "The Showa Denko Tryptophan disaster" and "An example of fatal substantial equivalence" where we demonstrate the uselessness of present approval procedures.
Consequently all biotech products that are used as food or feed or are released into the environment for other purposes have to be withdrawn from the market.
